IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT PARTICIPATING IN CLINICAL STUDIES

You should learn as much as possible about the clinical research studies that interest you. You should also feel comfortable discussing your questions and concerns with members of the research team. Anyone considering participating in a clinical research study should learn the potential benefits and risks associated with participation.

Potential Benefits:

  • Access to new therapies: Studies that involve investigational medications may provide you access to novel therapies that are not yet available. In comparison, studies that involve FDA-approved medication may provide you access to that therapy. These therapies may improve your skin disease.
  • Free or low-cost study medications: Study medications may be free or provided at low cost. Some studies may pay for part or all of your study medication; some studies may even provide compensation for your participation in the study. Please check with the study team to understand what is provided through the study.
  • Individualized care from our qualified research team: As a participant in our studies, you will receive individualized attention and care from our highly skilled research team, who can help you navigate through the healthcare system and be your advocate.
  • Contribute to science: Be a part of the research team that help other patients in the future. Many treatments we have today are available because large numbers of patients chose to participate in clinical research studies.

Other Considerations:

Not being able to choose which treatment you get: In some studies called “randomized controlled trials,”, you will be randomly assigned to get a specific treatment. In some studies, you may be randomly assigned to get a placebo (sugar pill). To avoid bias, in a randomized, double-blinded study, neither you nor your doctors know which treatment you’re getting.

Sometimes, the new treatment may not work for you, even if it benefits other people in the trial. The new treatment could also be less effective than what is currently available.

Some studies require more frequent doctors’ visits or testing to monitor you. This could potentially mean more travel and time in the doctor’s office for you.

Thank you for your interest in clinical studies. If you are a patient and are interested in our clinical trials, please contact us at (323) 865-3641 or email us at skinstudy@med.usc.edu
